The group representing victims of alleged abuse in the Defence Forces has welcomed the decision by the government to engage with them on the terms for a full public inquiry.

Tánaiste and Defence Minister Micheál Martin confirmed he will be recommending a full Tribunal of Inquiry to Cabinet on Tuesday - however, he will not be including Terms of Reference unless they have been approved by the Women of Honour group.

Spokesperson and retired Army Captain Diane Byrne says negotiations will continue through the summer to get agreement on the terms of reference:

"At this point now we're back to engaging on the Terms of Reference in the hopes that we can come to an agreement. The chances of that happening in advance of summer break is unlikely but we will be engaging in the hopes that we could do that. It's likely that it will be September and that's where the position is now that if we can get agreement by September, he will bring it to cabinet".
