A growing 'grinds' culture means about 60 percent of Leaving Cert students are now taking extra lessons.
The Irish Independent reports this is most common among children from well off families.
Research from the ESRI found that 59 percent are taking grinds outside school time in total.
However that drops to just 36pc among children whose parents have a lower secondary school education, and no degree.
