Housing Minister Darragh O'Brien has been defending a decision not to announce a rent freeze in the Budget.

The Minister said rents are now linked to inflation, but the Government has to take both tenants and smaller landlords into consideration, when introducing any new measures.

Darragh O'Brien said a specific cap on rents will be introduced in the coming weeks.

"I'm actually going to bring in a percentage round cap which is which would be considerably lower than the 4% and that will be brought in, within the coming weeks. In this session of the of the Dáil. This is going to be a game changer for renters, it is going to take a bit of time, and I know people are frustrated around this but we can't fix all of the issues around renters and affordability in one year.
