Housing stock in Ireland increased by more than 5 per cent, to more than 2 point 1 million, between April 2016 and April 2022.
CSO census figures show the number of vacant homes fell by 11 per cent in that time to over 163 thousand properties.
The number of homes owned without a mortgage or a loan increased by 11 per cent to nearly 680 thousand .
There was a significant increase in the number of households with people aged 65 and over renting from a private landlord.
That's up 83 per cent since 2016 to almost 17 thousand.
