GPs in are carrying out an average of 440-thousand consultations a week, according to the HSE
Hospital numbers are also at a record high, with 29-thousand patients presented at emergency departments last week.
People are being urged to consider all healthcare options if seeking treatment this bank holiday weekend.
Mike O'Connor is the national advisor for acute hospitals, he says the entire sector is under immense pressure:
"I think we're very good in the hospitals are talking about our activity. With our colleagues, if you look at the factor that they're doing 440,000, it's multiples of that work. They are doing a huge amount of all of the heavy lifting or most of the heavy lifting in healthcare on a week-to-week basis. I think that there is a demand in health which I think is putting pressure on both General Practitioners and, in addition to that, our emergency department".
