The Irish Blood Transfusion Service had to call Britain for help twice last year to import blood for patients here.
That's according to the organisation's annual report for 2021, which says it faced serious challenges keeping up with demand.
This is despite a slight increase in the volume of blood collected, an increase of just under 4% on the previous year.
Meanwhile, The IBTS is urging the public to support their clinic at City Hall this week.
Over 22,000 donations are needed over the next two months with supplies of O-negative, A-positive and B-negative in short supply in the country.
The clinics today and tomorrow are open from 3:45pm to 7:40pm and the service is offering two hours free parking at the nearby Q-Park for anyone who donates.
