The INMO says unsafe staffing levels within the HSE are directly affecting the quality of life of nurses and midwives.

In a meeting with the Oireachtas Health Committee, the union highlighted the devastating impact the shortage of staff is having on the tens of thousands of nurses and midwives in the public health sector.

Cork University Hospital is the second most overcrowded hospital in the country again today with 82 patients being treated on trolleys at the hospital

Aideen Carberry, Communications officer with SIPTU, says staff are worried about the delivery of healthcare to their patients:

"85% of respondents said that there was a somewhat negative or very negative impact, not only on staff, but also on services. I think what was very telling was that they do mainly seem to be concerned about the services, they're talking about the likes of being late delivering meals to patients, an increase in waiting lists for patients"
