The 2019 Comptroller and Auditor General's report found that the luxury items such as legs of lamb and prosciutto were used in cookery classes for prisoners.

The Prison Service spends over eight million euro on food every year, while last year it cost up to over seven euro a day to provide meals for an inmate.

The report also shows that over €7,000 was spent on a Sky TV subscription for a staff mess, which has since been cancelled.
