Investigations are continuing into a number of ramming incidents at State and Government buildings overnight.

A man in his 40s has been arrested in connection with the damage caused to gates at the Department of the Taoiseach, the Office of the Attorney General, the Department of Housing, and Áras an Uachtaráin.

The motive remains unclear, but it is believed to be an isolated series of events.

Cathal Berry, independent TD and former Army Ranger, says it's reassuring to see the threat was contained:

"The perimeter of all these buildings last night was very, very secure, which is good. So the gates actually did their job. There was some damage done to some of the gates and some damage done to the white van as well. But nobody was seriously injured. Also from the Leinster house campus point of view, I think it's important the public are aware that there's 24/7 security there. We have armed soldiers on duty and members of an Garda Siochana there as well".
