Ireland is the fifth most expensive country in Europe for buying petrol, according to a new survey.
The country’s average price for a litre of fuel over the first six months of the year was €1.41, according to shopping site picoldi.com.
Tax makes up around 60% of the price of petrol.
Head of Communications at AA Ireland, Paddy Comyn, says it's hoped prices will start dropping following a meeting of oil-producing nations.
"They agreed to increase oil production, because oil production had really been cut dramatically because simply there was no demand for the product.
"That has increased, and what we should start seeing slowly - it takes about 15 days before the prices are reflected at the pumps here - is that hopefully the prices should start levelling out a bit."
