Ireland's first ever specialist menopause clinic opened today, in the National Maternity Hospital in Dublin.
The clinic will help patients with serious medical conditions to manage their menopausal symptoms.
It is planned that a further three specialist clinics will be approved, funded and developed in 2022.
Dr. Deirdre Lundy, a women's health specialist says this service is vital for menopausal women with underlying health issues:
"The problem is there are some cases where the authorities that provide guidance on how to care for women going through menopause always say, if the patient has had thrombosis, blood clots in the past, if she's been treated for cancer of this, do not prescribe in general practice, have her reviewed in a menopause specialty service. So we never had a specialty service in Ireland to refer to before. Now we do."
