The Irish Cancer Society says the health service must stop chasing cancer patients with debt collectors.

The Irish Examiner is reporting the HSE has spent over 4 million euro on debt collecting services since 2013.

According to the health service, it sends a fee reminder 30 days after an invoice has been issued,

Then the case is referred to debt collectors if there's no action within the following 7 days.

The charges include 100 euro for emergency department attendance and 80 per night spent in hospital, up to a maximum of 800 over any 12 month period.
