Chief Commissioner, Sinéad Gibney, says the denial of driving licenses and access to bank accounts for those in Direct Provision in 2021 was a bad reflection on the way the State treats immigrants:
"It really is such an issue for people living in Direct Provision because many of them are in rural locations. So even though for example, in 2017, the right to work was granted to people in the international protection system, it was very difficult for a lot of people to make that right real because they couldn't travel to work. And then of course, with the added difficulty around being able to open bank accounts or not being able to open bank accounts."
