The Irish Travel Agents Association says the rising costs people are experiencing when booking a holiday to Spain this year are down to supply and demand and an increase in air fares.

Prices for popular family holiday destinations abroad have rocketed by up to 16% at peak times.

Popular sun holidays in the Canary Islands, Spain, and Portugal, are significantly more expensive in July and August of this year compared to the same period pre-pandemic in 2019.

The average price for a week long holiday to Lanzarote was €746 before the pandemic but that has now risen by 11% to €831.

The ITAA says this year's prices are being compared to 2019, so that's a three year price difference and higher fuel costs have now become a factor for airline.

Speaking to RedFM News,CEO of the ITAA, Cork based travel agent Pat Dawson, says air fares are high at the moment.

"It's all driven on supply and demand, and the more flights that are full the dearer it will be.

"Prices for air fares are still very high.

"There's still a lack of capacity, Cork could still do with more capacity.

"We're coming up now to a very busy Easter period where the vast majority of flights are full."
