Journalist, author and feminist campaigner Nell McCafferty has died at the age of 80.
Taoiseach Simon Harris described the Derry woman as fierce, fearless and fiery.
He said she didn't suffer fools but had a kindness and warmth for many.
Nell McCafferty became a journalist in her 20's, wrote many books and was a founding member of the Irish Women's Liberation Movement.
She became an outspoken advocate for women's rights, the poor and for people who suffered injustice.
She died this morning at a Co. Donegal nursing home.
Journalist Mary Kenny founded the movement with Nell McCafferty and others in 1970.
She says Nell's wit will never be forgotten:
" That's the thing about Nell. She had a marvelous sense of humour. Even people who were critical of her because she was so upfront were completely disarmed by her charm and how funny she could be, you know that very special Derry way so, indeed, very very sad."
