The Justice Minister says she has been reassured that community policing will continue to be a priority for Garda management following concerns about the impact of the return of a controversial roster.
The pre-Covid roster is due to be reintroduced on the 6th of November despite pushback from the Garda Representative Association who say they fear Gardaí will leave the job in their droves.
GRA members voted overwhelmingly in favour of a vote of no confidence in Commissioner Drew Harris earlier this week due to the return of the 2012 roster.
Speaking to RedFM News, Justice Minister Helen McEntee outlines what she was told about the future of community policing:
"No unit will be disbanded; no unit will be completely closed. There will obviously, in order to make up the fifth unit, be members taken from right across the various different sections. But this is about making sure that we have our Gardaí working where they need to be, at the time they need to be there. We have that visibility on the ground, and that of course includes community policing. And I've been reassured that community policing will continue".
