Members of clubs and societies could be exposed to personal liability for the wrongdoing of others, even if they played no active part.
That's the warning from the Law Reform Commission, if groups choose to run as an unincorporated association.
It's Consultation Paper on the Liability of Clubs, Societies and other Unincorporated Associations says as they're not recognised as legal entities, the organisations cannot be sued.
Commissioner at the Law Reform Commission, Richard Barrett says members should be aware of the risks of liability:
"People who might be involved in an organising committee, or they might be partially involved in some of the activities of the club. If something goes wrong, there is always an outside risk that individual members might be in the firing line for, for damages or responsibility for that problem".
