Leaving Cert exam students in Cork are turning to Childline for support to help them as they try to manage other issues around their mental health.
The State Exams begin in a little over two weeks and the ISPCC says they have seen a surge in demand for their services with many of the students contacting the helpline on waiting lists for mental health services.
Community Engagement Manager with the the ISPCC Victoria Howson, for some students, unresolved mental health issues are leading to them missing classes which is driving their anxiety around the State Exams.
Speaking to RedFM News Victoria Howson says if anxiety creeps in it can overwhelm students who end up no longer feeling motivated.
"Unfortunately in the past few years with Covid, we are seeing a spike in anxiety. This can be normal in times of crisis, but it can also be something that can paralyse you.
"If you're very anxious, instead of motivating you it can be paralytic, you literally can't study. You're being told then by your parents, caregivers and teachers that you have to, about how important it is -- and that pressure can mount.
"Definitely at this time of the year that is a primary concern for young people."
