That's according to the Irish Secondary School Students Union, which says a decision is needed on the Leaving Cert soon.

The Minister for Education, Norma Foley, prefers that the written exams do go ahead, but has acknowledged 'differing voices' on the matter.

Reuban Murray, President of the Union, says the lack of clarity is starting to impact on the students' workload.

"We starting to see motivation of students really dip.  They don't know if they're working for exams that aren't going to be there, or if they have to work harder, because if there's calculated grades being brought in everything that's being used now will be used to calculate it.

"What we're seeing now is really drastic effects on students, some are starting to get really demotivated or some are disillusioned as to what's going on."
