The operators of the National Lottery are to seek regulatory approval for a ‘must be won draw’ following controversy over no one winning the €19m jackpot for six months.

Premier Lotteries Ireland chief executive Andrew Algeo will tell the Oireachtas Finance Committee today the company wants to introduce the draw to ensure "an improbably long wait for a capped jackpot win cannot occur again".

Fine Gael TD and member of the Oireachtas Committee, Bernard Durkan, says reducing the Lotto numbers may be put to lotto bosses.

"We will see after discussion whether that will be a good idea.

"The regulator might have something to say about that, and the lottery management might have something to say about that.

"We would need to hear from them as to what's advisable and what's the right thing to do at the present time."
