The Media Minister says there's to be an external review of governance and culture at RTÉ.

Catherine Martin met the chair of RTÉ yesterday, saying what has transpired over payments at the station is 'shocking'.

RTE admitted on Thursday it paid €345,000 to Ryan Tubridy, on top of his declared salary, between 2017 and last year.

Minister Martin says she's told Siún Ní Raghallaigh, RTÉ must work to restore trust:

"I impressed upon the Chair that rebuilding trust and confidence is now paramount. This means ensuring complete transparency and clarity, not only in terms of what has happened, but also in how matters are dealt with in future. I expect that the Board of RTÉ will address these governance failings with thoroughness and urgency".

An opinion poll on the payments controversy at RTÉ shows 72% of people questioned don't believe trust in the state broadcaster can be restored.

75% say Ryan Tubridy should have corrected the record himself.

The poll by Amárach for today's Irish Mail on Sunday shows public confidence in RTÉ has been shattered by the affair - with more than 7 in 10 people saying they don't believe trust in the broadcaster can be restored after the recent revelations.

It also says 63% of people believe the license fee should now be reviewed.
