A key meeting of the advisory group on planning for the State exams is due to take place today.
The State Exams Advisory Group is expected to hear the views of representative bodies and consider the most appropriate arrangements.
The Minister for Education has been coming under pressure to replace the traditional examination model with a hybrid version similar to last year.
Sinn Fein spokesman on education Donnchadh O'Laoghaire says he hopes a decision will be announced today.
"I hope we have a decisive decision here.
"I'm sure that there are elements of this that will have to be worked out as time goes on, but when I talk to students what they say to me is that they urgently need clarity.
"The uncertainty that is building around this is not helping them, it's putting them under more pressure."
