Menthol cigarettes are being taken off the shelves today as a ban comes into force.

Studies show it's often children's first experience with smoking.

Health experts believe the ban will help stop them taking up the habit.

Paediatric Respiratory Consultant Professor Des Cox says it's ultimately a child protection issue.

"Younger people are more likely to take up menthol cigarettes, because of the fact that they're easier on the throat, they're less irritating, and they're more palatable.

"Tobacco companies have a long history of promoting these products particularly to the youth, and to women as well.

"This is a child protection issue, as a result of this ban we expect less children to take up smoking."
