The Tánaiste says the attempted murder of a PSNI officer at a sports complex in front of children 'represents a new low' for such criminal activity.

Off-duty police officer Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell was shot in Omagh County Tyrone last night.

He's currently in a critical but stable condition in hospital.

Inspector Caldwell was attacked by two masked men, who police who believe are connected to a dissident Republican group.

Micheál Martin says sadly there's been several concerning incidents of this kind recently.

"There have been a number of attempted attacks on police over the last number of months, and last evening art reached an appalling level in terms of this gun attack at a sport centre, where there were many young people.

"For them to witness such an horrific act is in itself very traumatic, and also that the attempted murder happened in front of his son represents a new low in such criminal activity."
