Motorists attempting to renew or take out new car insurance from the end of this month, will not legally be able to unless they provide their driver number.
The change kicks in on 31st March, and is part of measures aimed at reducing the number of uninsured drivers on the roads.
The driver number is listed under section 4d on a license.
Chief Executive of the Motor Insurers’ Bureau of Ireland, David Fitzgerald, says the move is part of the Irish Motor Insurance Database project,
"The database is already making a big difference. It's been used by the Gardaí for a couple of years. They already have three 3 million vehicles and 5 million driver details that we're giving
them on a daily basis, and they're using the new database. In the last year, they've seized thousands of additional vehicles last year for no insurance, they've called it a game changer".
