Motorists are being warned they are putting lives at risk by speeding and driving while distracted.
Over one hundred drivers have been detected breaking the speed limit so far on National Slow Down Day, with one caught doing 136 kilometres per hour in a 100 zone.
Road deaths have fallen from thirty-eight people on this day last year to twenty-four so far this year.
Superintendent Eddie Golden, says not using a phone while driving plays a huge role in preventing serious and fatal collisions:
"They are now using them for checking social media, checking, messaging, Whatsapps, whatever it might be as they're driving. We are finding that unless you actually put the phone away physically now, the temptation is there for people to be distracted, unless you have 100% concentration on the road, then your chances of, first of all, of exceeding the speed limit or putting yourself in a dangerous situation increases dramatically"
