MTU says it will take a number of weeks before an investigation into the ransomware attack on the university will be completed.

The university's four Cork campuses will remain closed until Monday due to the cyber attack which occurred last weekend.

MTU says immediate steps were taken to intercept and manage the incident and they have been working closely with the National Cyber Security Centre, the Data Protection Commission, and the Gardai.

An Emergency Managament Team is in place at MTU as an investigation into the cause and extent of the attack is continuing as well as the safest and most efficient recovery process.

It's hoped that the college will be able to return to on site learning from Monday.

Speaking to RedFM News MTU Vice President t for finance and administration Paul Gallagher says the data which may have been breached remains under investigation.

"The immediate thing is to get the network secure, so we can get our students and staff back on campus in a phased and managed approach from Monday.

"I do think the investigation and the full recovery of the network is going to take a number of weeks.

"There's no point in us raising any panic, we need to be sure in terms of what may have been accessed, and we simply cannot tell that until we have that investigation at a further stage."
