The Environment Minister insists the National Development Plan will help Ireland to reach its climate action goals.
The €165m plan published in Cork yesterday aims to put greater emphasis on rail and bus links, and will invest in public transport at a two-to-one ratio to roads.
Key to the multi million euro plan is the delivery of houses with over 300,000 to be built between now and the end of 2030.
Some of the projects outlined which will benefit Cork directly include investment in the M20 and M28 road projects along with the development of a suburban rail network between Mallow, Midleton and Cobh.
Minister Eamonn Ryan says the new plans for Cork and Limerick will deliver on the country's green goals.
"In my mind some of the most significant projects in the NDP which wasn't in the previous one is that we're going to build a metropolitan rail system in Cork, and we're going to build a metropolitan rail system for Limerick.
"The big advantage of those is that they are using existing rail lines."
