The figure for all of 2020 is on course to be at least 6% higher than last year.

New Garda figures show 7,258 individual people have suffered domestic abuse so far this year.

78% are women and 22% are men. The total figure for all of last year was 7,489.

If the current rate continues until the end of next month, it will reach 8,000 for 2020.

Gardaí say domestic abuse can be physical, sexual, financial or psychological.

It's committed by a family member or an intimate partner.

Over 2,100 women have been domestically abused in Dublin this year and nearly 500 in Cork.

Other areas with high numbers include Limerick, Louth, Galway, Laois/Offaly and Kildare.

Justice Minister Helen McEntee says combating domestic abuse is a key priority for her department.
