The number of uninsured vehicles on Irish roads has reached record levels.

164,000 were recorded last year, according to figures from the Motor Insurers' Bureau of Ireland - an increase of almost 14,000 compared with 2018.

They now account for roughly 7.6 per cent of all vehicles on our roads.

It comes as Gardaí continue to trial a new automatic detection system - it's expected to be fully rolled out this year.

Head of the MIBI, David Fitzgerald, says the increasing number of uninsured vehicles on our roads is a concern.

"We estimate that one in thirteen of private vehicles on the road is uninsured, it grew by almost 14,000 uninsured vehicles compared to 2018 so it's very alarming.

"That's why this new technology its so important, because it will tighten the net on these uninsured drivers, and give the Gardaí the tools to correct these uninsured drivers much easier."
