The Oireachtas Finance Committee is to look for powers to compel the head of the Department of Health to appear before it.
Members of the Committee want to question Secretary General Robert Watt about the abandoned secondment of Dr Tony Holohan to Trinity College.
The outgoing CMO decided not to proceed with the appointment after controversy surrounding the proposal.
