More than half of LGBT+ students in Ireland have heard homophobic remarks from school staff.

A new survey by Belong To and Columbia University shows that more than 3 in 4 students feel unsafe at school while a third skip class to avoid negative treatment.

CEO of the Charity, Moninne Griffith, says there are some positives to the research:

"99% of students said that they now have at least one student teacher or a staff member in a school that they can go to for support. That's amazing because we know from this research and other research that when a young person has somebody in the school that they feel safe, that they can talk with that improves their mental health and well being and the likelihood that they'll stay on in school."
