Over 75% of school principals experience severe burnout

More than three in four secondary school principals and deputies say they've experienced moderate to severe burnout as a result of their job.

New figures from the National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals show 20% of its members are working more than 60 hours a week.

Burnout, stress and high absenteeism are among the issues facing school principals and their staff, the NAPD annual conference has heard.

The staffing shortage in schools was also flagged and Education Minister Norma Foley says she’s considering lifting restrictions on retired teachers to increase teaching supply.

Other barriers identified to recruitment were the costs associated with housing and the masters that every secondary school teacher must do.
