Over half of child car seats are fitted incorrectly, according to the Road Safety Authority.
Gardaí are urging parents and guardians to properly install their kids' car seats.
The RSA has started a voluntary code of practice for retailers to increase awareness of car seat safety.
Aisling Sloyan from the RSA says the problem can lead to deaths:
"If a car seat is not correctly fitted, it can lead to a serious injury or worse, a fatality. And none of us want that. So I suppose, no one injury should happen so we want to make sure that seats are fitted correctly, like you or I wouldn't go driving a car without putting our seatbelt on so equally, we should be prioritising our children as well."
