Parents and carers are being reminded to protect their children's skin as temperatures soar today.
The HSE says there are 13,000 cases of skin cancer every year in Ireland, which is expected to more than double by 2045.
Children's skin is very sensitive to UV rays from the sun and sunburn during childhood increases the risk of getting skin cancer as an adult.
Consultant Dermatologist, Bláithín Moriarty has this advice to stay safe:
"First of all be aware of the UV index. This is a metric that tells us quite how intense the sun is at any given point, at any given time. So in Ireland, between March and October, most of the time the UV index is actually high enough that we should be mindful of the risk of burn or of UV damage".
