Parents of babies and children up to four and a half years old, are being advised not to give them rice milk as a substitute for cows milk, breast milk or infant formula.
The Food Safety Authority of Ireland is reiterating the warning due to findings that indicated that there are low levels of inorganic arsenic found in rice milk.
Dr Wayne Anderson director of food sciences and standards at the Food Safety Authority explains; It was brought to our awareness that there was an infant formula that was purchased over the internet and clinical colleagues made us aware of this, we thought it was prudent at this time just to reiterate our advice for children who are less than four and a half years old, they really shouldn't be drinking, rice drinks, rice milk on a regular basis."
