Passport offices in Cork and Dublin are to operate extended opening hours to keep up with demand.

Extra overtime will be made available to staff, which could see offices operate seven-days a week.

Around 1.7 million passport applications are expected to be made in the weeks and months ahead as people book holidays.

Fine Gael Senator Garrett Ahearn says he has been given assurances of the measures by the Transport Minister:

"He said,  from this week on they're going to increase overtime which gives the possibility to go to seven days a week. This actually helps the industry. An industry that has been flattened for the last two years. We want people to be able to spend, to take that opportunity to support these industries. But to do that, the Passport Office needs to deliver them as quickly as possible, which they do on the vast majority of cases."
