Patrick Quirke's lawyers are preparing for a further appeal against his murder conviction after the Supreme Court agreed to hear it on two specific matters.
The 52-year-old farmer from Breanshamore, Co Tipperary is trying to have his conviction quashed for the murder of his love rival.
"Following a 71-day trial in 2019, Patrick Quirke was found guilty of murdering his love rival, local DJ Bobby ‘Mr Moonlight’ Ryan, sometime between June 3rd 2011 and April 30th 2013.
He lost a lengthy appeal against that conviction but the Supreme Court has now agreed to hear a further appeal on two matters which it considers to be of general public importance.
The first relates to the validity of a warrant used to search Quirke’s home. His lawyers unsuccessfully argued that it didn’t cover the seizure of a computer, but the Supreme Court has agreed to hear fresh submissions on it
The second relates to the DPP’s discretion to call expert witnesses. The highest court in the land also feels that’s an issue worthy of being cleared up in the public interest.
No date has yet been set for this appeal."
