People Before Profit is calling on the Government to introduce legislation to combat exploitation of self-employed people who engage in platform work.
The term is used to describe people such as fast food delivery persons who get their instructions from a mobile phone app.
27 million people across Europe earn their living this way but have no employment rights or entitlements under the law.
People Before Profit TD Paul Murphy says European Parliament plans to address the problem are some way off and it's time for the Government here to act:
"Up until now, their legal status has often been unclear or disputed, whereby they have been treated as though they're not employees, that they're self employed people - which has quite negative implications for the workers and saves the companies a whole lot of money".
