Justice Minister Helen McEntee will seek cabinet approval for the move, after pictures of thousands of women and girls were leaked online last week.

There'll be a separate offence for taking, publishing or distributing intimate images without consent that will carry a maximum penalty of a year in prison, in a bid to tackle so-called revenge porn.

Cliona Sadlier from the Rape Crisis Network says our current laws need updating:

"If you click a button online to share an image without someone's consent that action continues without you taking any further action so the harassment of the activity on the part of the perpetrator may be just a once off click of a button. So the law really needed to keep up with this because the impact for survivors of this and for people who have had their images shared in this manner is one that has rolled on and on."
