The former SDLP leader passed away yesterday
The family of the 83 year old have asked people to light a candle this evening to pay their respects, rather than line the streets.
His remains will travel from his Donegal home to the Cathedral of St Eugene in Derry this evening.
Several local authorities have opened online books of condolences, including Dublin City Council.
