People who want to donate their organs are being encouraged to share their wishes with their family.
Organ Donor Awareness Week is getting underway today and runs until next Saturday.
Over 600 people need organ transplants in this country and are on waiting lists.
University Hospital Limerick Clinical Lead in Organ Donation, Dr Catherine Motherway, says organ donations are vital:
"We are marking the start of Organ Donation Awareness Week by actually, I suppose, starting the conversation with our society about the need for organ donation, the benefits of organ donation to our transplant recipients, and also honouring those who have previously given organs, both living and deceased in Ireland throughout history of organ donation in Ireland and transplantation".
