Ireland has high costs, but also has higher incomes than many other countries.

That's according to Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform Michael McGrath, who said there is no denying the gravity of the current cost of living crisis.

It comes after the government announced a €6.7 billion package for Budget 2023, which is set to take place two weeks earlier than normal, on September 27th.

Opposition parties slammed the Government for the delay in providing more measures, saying they are watching people fall into poverty.

Speaking on the Neil Prendeville Show on Cork's RedFM, Minister McGrath says that the economy is in good health after the pandemic:

"The good news is that the economy is in good health, we're almost at full employment. The rebound coming out of COVID has been extraordinary, and I think the fact that we did extend a lot of support to households and businesses has been vindicated as the correct approach. We're seeing the benefits of that come through into tax returns, not just corporation tax, but also income tax and VAT and across a number of other revenue streams."
