The Government's being accused of failing to tackle the worst housing and homeless crisis in the history of the state.

The Raise the Roof housing campaign will protest outside the Department of Housing in Dublin at 1.15pm this afternoon in anger over the issue.

It says the majority of low and average income workers and families are 'priced out' of the housing market due to the lack of affordable homes.

It's also planning a national housing demonstration in the city on October 2nd, depending on the public health situation.

Coordinator of Raise the Roof MacDara Doyle is calling for urgent Government action to address problems for tenants.

"We also need to address quite seriously and quite urgently the problems in the rental sector.

"You need to develop a secure tenancy model, which would see a rent freeze until we can establish a proper system of national regulation, a ban on false evictions, and the creation of tenancies of indefinite duration - most developed countries have these."
