There are renewed calls for non-usage fees on gift cards to be dumped.

New research by OptionsCard has found half of consumers have lost money on gift cards and 80 per cent feel the added fees are unfair.

While women buy more vouchers at 57 per cent, compared to 39 per cent of men.

Managing Director at OptionsCard.ie, Jonathan Grey says giving gift cards is one way to reward staff:

"All employees in Ireland are eligible to receive up to €1000 a year free from tax, if that is given as a gift card or gift voucher, but it can only be given in the form of a gift card, and the purpose of it is obviously to help people in their pockets, but also drive traffic into our retailers and our shops or hospitality businesses throughout the country".
