Rising costs means builders face prospect of going bust

Rising build costs means some builders face going bust if they deliver projects they tendered for over 12 months ago.

Concerte prices have risen by over 30% over the last year and steel is up 100% and these increases have led the preferred bidder of the Glashaboy Flood Relief works in Glanmire to raise concerns in advance of the project start date.

The Construction Industry Federation says Brexit, the Covid 19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine have all had a significant impact on supply chains for materials in the construction sector which has led to extraordinary increases in the cost of materials.

It's hoped that recent Government changes to public contracts - which in the past were all fixed price - will ensure that Rising build costs means some builders face going bust if they deliver projects they tendered for over 12 months ago. works projects go ahead.

Speaking to RedFM News Conor O'Connell of the CIF says infrastructure has to be delivered in a manner that is fair to everyone.

"We'd be concerned for contractors that are in a pposition to stand over prices submitted several months ago.

"We understand from our interactions with the office of Government Procurement and other bodies that the new mechanisms will allow for projects as [the Glashaboy Flood Relief works] to proceed in a manner that's fair to everyone."
