The Road Safety Authority is appealing for motorists to slow down and be aware of vulnerable road users.

It comes as the death toll on the country's roads reached 78 so far this year.

The RSA is concerned at the escalating figure.

Chairperson Liz O' Donnell says motorists can take action to help improve safety on the nation's roads:

"We're particularly worried about motorcyclists, 17 this year, 21 last year. That's a very high rate of death by people using motorbikes. We're calling for people, motorists, particularly to slow down and be mindful of vulnerable road users. Thankfully, pedal cycle fatalities are down, and I think that's due to the fact that we have made such moves in terms of infrastructure to make cycling more safe."
