The County Council is to consider the move and discuss it when it carries out a review of speed limits next summer

Last year across Ireland 27 pedestrians lost their lives on the nation's roads while 4 pedestrians have died on Cork roads so far this year

International research shows that there are fewer road traffic collisions when the speed limit is reduced and the severity of injuries sustained are much less

Brian Farrell of the RSA told RedFM News that they support the rollout of reduced speed limits in towns and villages across Cork:

"It's about protecting the most vulnerable in our society. Vulnerable roads users like pedestrians and cyclists and children and I think what people have got to remember is, if a vehicle hits a pedestrian or cyclist at 60 kilometres per hour, 9 out of ten will probably suffer fatal injuries. Hit at 30 kilometres per hour, it's the other way around, 9 out of ten will survive. So it really is critically important that we look at reducing our speed limits in our towns and cities"
