The government could be facing an uphill battle to reach its 2030 target of having 945,000 Electric Vehicles on Irish roads.
Figures from The Society of the Irish Motor Industry for January show the sale of EV's at 12 percent of overall news car sales.
The figures also showed a 15 per cent increase in the number of ‘241’ vehicle sales when compared to the same period last year.
Brian Cooke, the Director General of SIMI said while the target for EV's is high it's achievable:
"The targets are exceptionally challenging. The bottom line is we don't sell enough cars at the moment to actually meet those targets. That's not to be negative about it. I think there will be hundreds and hundreds of thousands of electric vehicles on the road by the end of the decade. The government has an interim target of 175,000 cars at the end of 2025. At the moment we're just about on target to actually hit the midterm goals”.
