Sinn Fein is demanding the Government immediately increases the back to school allowance.
It's bringing a motion on the matter forward in the Dail later - saying parents are already dreading the bills for September.
Education spokesperson Donnchadh O'Laoghaire says he wants to see the allowance increased by 50% for those who already get it.
But he also want to see it extended to middle income families.
"About 500,000 extra families, and targeting those families with a combined income of under €80,000, and increasing by 50% for those already getting it.
"What we're also trying to do is tackle the cost of books, of voluntary contributions and of uniforms."
